LUQ Bytes - September 2003
This has been a very rewarding as well as hectic year for the LUQ site. LUQ procured an excellent review this last June. The site received praises on the way they have achieved a “a keen awareness and responsiveness on the part of the PI and the co-PIs....the same leadership attributes necessary to the ultimate long-term success of the program. “ - Henry L. Gholz, Program Director, DEB/LTER. Information Management (IM) was praised for its continuous improvement and for its reorganization which has “heightened LUQ’s focus and efficiency” (visit special IM Web site at: http://luq.lternet.edu/datamng/index.html). This achievement was the result of a total reorganization within the site in all its aspects but mostly it reflects the results of team working for a single purpose. It was certainly rewarding after all the pain.
At the same time, LUQ IM have made considerable progress in its network project endeavors, the CLIMDB and the transition to EML.
Right at the last moment (just before the site review in June) somebody twisted the information manager’s arm and demanded LUQ’s participation in the CLIMDB (Quite a lobbying performed by our executive committee at the higher hierarchy!). For three days we worked and finished a Level 0 participation in the project thanks to the great online harvesting feature provided by the Andrews and Don Henshaw and staff’s support. This past month we hired a student that will be working uniquely in developing two other higher level stations data for this database.
The other big IM project has been LUQ’s metadata EML conversion. David Blankman visited LUQ and set our SQL server up for us. Afterwards, although a little bit too slowly, the metadata is more than a half way converted to EML. Once the metadata is converted the next big task will be converting all the data sets to a compatible format.
