Spring break means sampling at SALTEX

The Craft and Pennings lab were hard at work at SALTEX this past weekend. The Craft lab collected cores from all the plots for the analysis of soil properties, and the Pennings lab planted three species of brackish marsh plants into all the plots. These "phytometers" will be harvested in the summer or fall, and will measure the quality of the plots for supporting growth of brackish marsh plants. We have not seen much invasion of the plots by more salt-tolerant plants, probably because the plots are so far away from appropriate vegetation. So this experiment will at least show (we expect) that the press plots would be readily colonized by brackish marsh plants if they were able to get there.
