Research Emphasis:

The hypsometry (surface area as a function of depth) of a tidal creek plays an important role in temporal variations of circulation and salt transport at scales ranging from semi-diurnal to fortnightly. We plan to measure and model the hydrodynamics and salt regime of a series of tidal creeks having a variety of hypsometric curves. The model will include simulation of flooding and drying salt marshes and creek banks. We will conduct field studies to measure:

1. the effects of forcing from water level and density gradients which reinforce and counteract at different stages of the tidal cycle
2. variations of the salt balance along the different positions of a tidal creek
3. tidal energy dissipation in and along the tidal creeks.

The ultimate goal is to better understand processes that affect the transport and dispersion of salt and other material.
