Improved WiFi coverage for residential areas at UGAMI

Internet connectivity is an increasingly important resource for researchers and visitors at remote field stations like the UGA Marine Institute. Last year UGA provided funding to upgrade the microwave transmitter that serves as the primary internet connection to the mainland, increasing bandwidth from about 100 Mb/s to 1 Gb/s on campus. UGAMI has also recently added dedicated fiber connections to selected trailers and houses in the residential areas near campus, but broader access to these residential connections has been limited due to poor Wifi signal strength.

Last week we installed additional Wifi access points to extend high speed internet access to all trailers in Pond Circle and all FEMA trailers. We also now have good internet service in most of the houses in Shell Hammock and trailers in Magnolia Circle and are looking for way to improve service there as well.

Now visitors to UGAMI should be able to take full advantage of our increased internet bandwidth, both on campus and in their residences.
