Field Notes from Interns Clara and Shawna
Our names are Clara and Shawna, and we are the summer 2023 GCE-LTER Field Crew interns! Here on Sapelo, we’ve enjoyed assisting Laura, John, and Jonah with the LTER’s core projects like water quality and vegetation monitoring throughout the island and the surrounding sounds. We’ve also had the opportunity to help the LTER’s PI’s and UGAMI researchers with their ongoing projects investigating marsh disturbance, parasite interactions, oyster reef habitats, and more. Our average days include some muddy field work, boat rides, lab processing, and annoying John and Jonah (our favorite requirement of the job). Working with the GCE has been an invaluable learning experience and has earned us lifelong connections and friends.
