I-16 shut down due to a major bridge accident, affecting travel from Athens to Sapelo Island

*UPDATE* The GA86 bridge was removed ahead of schedule and all lanes of I-16 are now fully open (more information).

The bed of a large truck traveling on I-16 Thursday morning struck the GA86 bridge near Soperton, Georgia, knocking it off its base and shifting it over 6 feet. I-16 will be closed to traffic in both directions for the forseeable future between the GA15 (Adrian) exit and US1 (Oak Park) exit as DOT begins repairs on the bridge. People travelling between Athens and Sapelo Island should plan to take alternative routes to avoid this section of the interstate.

More information is available from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution here.
