<title>Overview</title>
<para>We conduct annual population surveys of marine invertebrates to characterize patterns in species abundance and distribution relative to changes in biotic and abiotic environmental conditions across the GCE domain. Surveys are currently conducted in Fall adjacent to permanent plant plots.</para>
<para>Marine invertebrate population monitoring was initiated at the ten GCE monitoring sites in October 2000.  Sampling was conducted twice a year (June and October) until 2006, but we found no significant difference in population size estimates made in the spring or fall for most of the common species, so sampling was reduced to the fall only.  Animal sampling areas are located adjacent to each permanent vegetation plot, and sampled for epifauna and macroinfauna. </para>
<para>One of the striking patterns since monitoring began in 2000 is that densities of the periwinkle snail, Littoraria irrorata, are lower in the Altamaha than in the other sounds.  This may be a result of the inability of larvae to recruit upstream, or else reduced survival of the new recruits.  Another striking pattern is that snail densities are higher at barrier island sites (GCE3, 6, 9) than at mainland sites on the same estuaries (GCE 1, 4 and 7).  We are currently investigating mechanisms creating these patterns (see Q5). ).</para>

<geographicDescription>Eulonia - Transitional salt marsh/upland forest site at the upper reach of the Sapelo River near Eulonia, Georgia. The main marsh area is to the north of the channel where the upland is controlled by DNR. Several small creeks lie within the study area.  Residential development is increasing on the upland areas south of the channel. A hydrographic sonde is deployed within this site attached to a private dock to the south of the main channel near the HW-17 bridge. The sonde is accessed from a dock on a private residence off of highway 17. As of late 2017 the property is owned by Linda Hornby. She asks that we notify her by text about an hour before arriving to service the sondes. There is no reason to go to this property other than for sonde work.</geographicDescription>

Some small creeks and one large creek (Hudson Creek) are present. Upland is heavily forested. Marsh to the north of the dock can be used for additional studies if larger areas are required. Upland to the North is being developed for residential use, so future access is uncertain. The USGS super station site (weather station plus multiple-sensor sonde) is deployed off the ferry dock.
