Abstract: The Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) LTER program, located on the central Georgia coast, was established in 2000. The study domain encompasses three adjacent sounds (Altamaha, Doboy, Sapelo) and includes upland (mainland, barrier islands, marsh hammocks), intertidal (fresh, brackish and salt marsh) and submerged (river, estuary, continental shelf) habitats. Patterns and processes in this complex landscape vary spatially within and between sites, and temporally on multiple scales (tidal, diurnal, seasonal, and interannual). Overlain on this spatial and temporal variation are long-term trends caused by climate change, sea level rise, and human alterations of the landscape. These long-term trends are likely to manifest in many ways, including changes in water quality, river discharge, runoff and tidal inundation patterns throughout the estuarine landscape. The overarching goal of the GCE program is to understand the mechanisms by which variation in the quality, source and amount of both fresh and salt water create temporal and spatial variability in estuarine habitats and processes, in order to predict directional changes that will occur in response to long-term shifts in estuarine salinity patterns. 6. Field and Laboratory Methods: Method 1: Hammock Selection -- In 2008 we selected two hammocks for detailed study: HN_I_1 is of Holocene origin and is located adjacent to Blackbeard Island to the north of Sapelo Island, Georgia; PC_I_29 is of Pleistocene origin and is located adjacent to the south end of Sapelo Island. These hammocks are of similar size, with similar vegetation zones in the high marsh. We set up transects in each hammock that run from the nearby upland (Blackbeard and Sapelo Islands, respectively), through the marsh, and up and over each hammock to the marsh adjacent to the Sound (Sapelo and Doboy, respectively). Method 2: Well Installation -- On each hammock, groundwater wells were installed along the transects in the locations sampled by vibracore. Wells were placed in sand layers in order to prevent clogging and to allow sampling of a continuously connected groundwater source. In addition to the vibracore stations, two additional lateral wells were installed at HN_I_1 approximately 5 meters to either side of the main transect near well #4 in order to get data on lateral inflow of groundwater. An additional upland well was also installed at this site in order to obtain a true zero salinity end member. The wells range in depth from 41 to 110 cm below a constant zero datum (99 to 232 cm below the surface). At PC_I_29, the two lateral wells are located near well #6. Well depths at this site range between 75 and 168 cm below a zero datum (130 to 247 cm below the surface). Method 3: Pressure Measurements -- Groundwater pressure was measured using a Hach Hydrolab MiniSonde data logger installed in a PVC well, suspended from the top of the well using a metal cable so that the sensor was appoximately 0.25m from the well bottom. Sensors are retrieved and data are downloaded approximately semi-monthly. Method 4: Data Post-processing -- Raw binary data were converted to ASCII text files using Win-Situ software provided with the instrument. Text files were then imported into MATLAB using the GCE Data Toolbox for MATLAB, and integrated with metadata about well location, sensor placement and well elevation. Complete data sets were then quality-controlled using automated QA/QC rules and visual inspection. Method 5: Pressure Correction -- Groundwater pressure data were corrected for atmospheric pressure using atmospheric pressure data simultaneously collected using a barometric sensor in the well field. b.
