I. Data Set Descriptors A. Title: Merryl Alber. 2016. Long-term Burrowing Crab Population Abundance Data from the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER Fall Marsh Monitoring Program. Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER Data Catalog (data set INV-GCES-1609; /data/INV-GCES-1609) B. Accession Number: INV-GCES-1609 C. Description 1. Originator(s): Name: Merryl Alber Address: Dept. of Marine Sciences University of Georgia Athens, Georgia 30602-3636 Country: USA Email: malber@uga.edu 2. Abstract: This data set includes long-term observational data on burrowing crab abundance at 10 Georgia Coastal Ecosystems marsh sites used for annual plant and invertebrate population monitoring. Crab abundance was determined by performing surveys of crab hole occurance within replicate 625 square centimeter quadrats and converting the counts to number per square meter. Surveys were performed annually during October within the mid-marsh and creek bank zones at GCE marsh study sites 1 through 10 (i.e. n = 4 per zone at each site). Surveys were also performed in an additional high marsh Juncus zone at several sites beginning in 2009 (i.e. n = 4 quadrats per site). Note that this census method does not differentiate which species made a particular hole and therefore only estimates total burrowing crab abundance, potentially including species Uca pugnax, Uca minax, Uca pugilator, Armases cinereum, Eurytium limosum, Sesarma reticulatum and Panopeus spp. Crab holes that are not actively maintained are quickly covered by tidal activity and other sediment disturbances, therefore plugged holes were assumed to be unoccupied and excluded from the counts. This data set includes cumulative observations from 2000 to 2021, and will be updated annually to include the prior year observations. 3. Study Type: Synthesis 4. Research Origin Descriptors A. Overall Project Description 1. Project Title: Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER - IV 2. Principal Investigators: Name: Merryl Alber Address: Dept. of Marine Sciences University of Georgia Athens, Georgia 30602-3636 Country: USA Email: malber@uga.edu 3. Funding Period: Feb 01, 2019 to Jan 31, 2025 4. Objectives: The GCE-LTER project has four goals. 1) Track environmental and human drivers that can cause perturbations in our focal ecosystems. This will be accomplished this through continuing long-term measurements of climate, water chemistry, oceanic exchange, and human activities on the landscape. 2) Describe temporal and spatial variability in physical, chemical, geological and biological characteristics of the study system (coastal wetland complexes) and how they respond to external drivers. This will be accomplished through field monitoring in combination with remote sensing and modeling. 3) Characterize the ecological responses of intertidal marshes to disturbance. This will be accomplished by ongoing monitoring and experimental work to evaluate system responses to major perturbations in three key marsh habitats (changes in inundation and predator exclusion in Spartina-dominated salt marshes; increases in salinity in fresh marshes; changes in runoff in high marshes), by implementing standardized experimental disturbances along salinity and elevation gradients, and by tracking responses to natural disturbances. 4) Evaluate ecosystem properties at the landscape level (habitat distribution, net and gross primary production, C budgets) and assess the cumulative effects of disturbance on these properties. The project will also develop relationships between drivers and response variables, which can be used to predict the effects of future changes. This will be accomplished through a combination of data synthesis, remote sensing and modeling. 5. Abstract: The Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) program, based at the University of Georgia Marine Institute on Sapelo Island, Georgia, was established in 2000 to study long-term change in coastal ecosystems. Estuaries (places where salt water from the ocean mixes with fresh water from the land) and their adjacent marshes provide food and refuge for fish, shellfish and birds; protect the shoreline from storms; help to keep the water clean; and store carbon. The GCE LTER researchers study marshes and estuaries to understand how these ecosystems function, to track how they change over time, and to predict how they might be affected by future changes in climate and human activities. They accomplish this by tracking the major factors that can cause long-term change in coastal areas (e.g. sea level, rainfall, upstream development), and measuring the effects of these factors on the study site. They also conduct focused studies to assess how key marsh habitats will respond to major changes expected in the future, including large-scale experiments to evaluate the effects of a) increases in the salinity of the water that floods freshwater marshes (mimicking drought and/or sea level rise), b) changes in water runoff from land into the upland marsh border (mimicking drought or upland development), and c) exclusion of larger organisms in the salt marsh (mimicking long-term declines in predators). During this award they will initiate additional studies to systematically evaluate how coastal wetlands respond to disturbances. Disturbances, or disruptions in the environment, are particularly important to understand in the context of long-term background changes such as increasing sea level, and GCE researchers are working to assess the cumulative effects of multiple disturbances on the landscape. The GCE education and outreach program works to share an understanding of coastal ecosystems with teachers and students, coastal managers, citizen scientist and the general public. 6. Experimental or Sampling Design a. Design Characteristics: This study was designed to determine the density of crabs at each of 10 intertidal marsh monitoring sites within the GCE-LTER domain. The density of active crab holes was used as a proxy for crab density to solve logistical constraints and to avoid excessive site disturbance. Counts of holes were made within randomly placed, small quadrats at four plots in the mid and creek bank marshes at each of 10 permanent monitoring sites. This design resulted in four replicate samples per zone (n = 4) within each site (or n = 8 per site). Counts were made by different teams of trained individuals (staff and volunteers). b. Permanent Plots: Samples were taken within 3 meters of the GCE permanent monitoring plots, which were established in the marsh areas at each GCE sampling site in October, 2000. Each site was divided into two nominal zones -- creek bank and mid-marsh -- and eight plots were randomly located in each zone and marked with stakes. Sites 9 and 10 have a high marsh Juncus zone which was also sampled in the same manner as creek bank and mid-marsh plots. c. Data Collection Duration and Frequency: For each sample, an area of marsh was selected that was similar in gross appearance and near to (within 3 m) a GCE permanent monitoring plot. The permanent plots were not used to avoid damaging the plants within them. Permanent plots 1, 3, 6, and 8 in each zone were selected to be the anchor plots for choosing sample areas. When wrack or other disturbances necessitated the use of alternate plots, these are indicated in the data set and noted as anomalies. All active (i.e. open) crab-produced holes were counted within the quadrat. Beginning of Observations: Oct 06, 2001 End of Observations: Oct 26, 2021 3. Research Methods a. Field and Laboratory Methods: Method 1: Crab Hole Counts -- A quadrat device was constructed of treated, 1" X 3/4" slats, drilled and joined with bolts and wing nuts. It was designed to enclose selectable areas of 625, 2500 or 5000 cm^2. The 625 cm^2 section was used for this study. The quadrat was randomly placed around the bases of the plants in the selected sampling area. Surface litter, when present, was removed, to aid visibility, before counts were made. Hole occupancy was not assessed but crab species visible in the immediate area were noted. Method 2: Density Estimation -- Per meter square densities are determined by dividing the hole count by the fraction of a m^2 represented by the quadrat section (625cm^2) used for counts. Method 3: RTK-GPS Survey of Permanent Plot Locations -- A survey was performed in April 2010 to measure the precise geographic locations and elevations of long-term plant plots at GCE-LTER marsh study sites 1-10. The survey was performed using a Trimble R6 real-time kinematic GPS sytem with Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) support. The base receiver was placed on a permanent cement base installed near each field site, connected to GLONASS satellite services via mobile 3G Internet connection, and allowed to establish a stable benchmark positional fix prior to the survey. A portable wireless rover unit was then used to collect and log horizontal position and vertical elevation data on the ground at the center of each plot. Data were then corrected and analyzed using Trimble Geomatics Office software to determine latitude, longitude and elevation, and plant plot locations were then registered in the GCE-LTER geographic database. Location, Longitude and Latitude columns were then added to the data table based on matching site, marsh zone and plot number of each record to the corresponding plot identifier in the geographic database. For plots that were lost due to catastrophic disturbance prior to 2010 and replaced, the measured location of the the replacement plots were used to provide estimated positional information for the legacy plots, and the estimated values were flagged and the level of uncertainty was described based on the number of times the plot was replaced prior to RTK-GPS survey. Method 4: Data Integration and Finalization -- Annual data sets from 2001 to 2015 were integrated using the GCE Data Toolbox for MATLAB software. All data records were combined using a metadata-based union approach that automatically aligns columns based on name, data type and units (multimerge.m), then all variable codes, quality-control flag definitions and other data set descriptors were harmonized and redundant definitions (i.e. duplicated due to minor text differences when metadata were merged) were deleted. A Date column was generated from numeric Year, Month and Day columns, then the redundant Month and Day columns were deleted. A text Site_Name column was also added to augment the numeric site code to assist with plot labeling. b. Protocols: Method 1: none Method 2: none Method 3: none Method 4: none c.
