Abstract: The Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) LTER is located along three adjacent sounds on the Atlantic coast and includes both intertidal marshes and estuaries. Long-term drivers of climate change, sea level rise and human alterations of the landscape will cause transitions in dominant habitat types (state changes) within the GCE domain by changing the amounts and patterns of water delivery across the landscape. These changes in water delivery can be conceptualized as presses and pulses in river inflow, local runoff, groundwater input, and tidal inundation, which will in turn manifest themselves as changes in salinity and inundation patterns in the domain. The research proposed for GCE-III is designed to address how variations in salinity and inundation, driven by climate change and anthropogenic factors, affect biotic and ecosystem responses at different spatial and temporal scales, and to predict the consequences of these changes for habitat provisioning and carbon (C) sequestration across the coastal landscape. The goals are to: 1) Track long-term changes in climate and human actions in the watershed and adjacent uplands, and evaluate the effects of these drivers on domain boundary conditions. 2) Describe temporal and spatial variability in physical, chemical, geological and biological, and to evaluate how they are affected by variations in river inflow and other boundary conditions. 3) Characterize the responses of three dominant habitats in the domain to pulses and presses in salinity and inundation. 4) Describe patterns of habitat provisioning and C sequestration and export in the GCE domain, and to evaluate how these might be affected by changes in salinity and inundation. Method 2: Data Acquisition and Processing -- Data arrays were periodically downloaded from the NOAA HADS web site, parsed, quality-checked, documented and archived in the GCE-LTER Information Management office using data retrieval and parsing functions in the GCE Data Toolbox for MATLAB (https://gce-svn.marsci.uga.edu/trac/GCE_Toolbox). Negative values of PAR (photosynthetically-available radiation) and total solar radiation, representing dark signal noise, were converted to zeros during data processing. Method 3: Data Integration -- Daily data downloads from the NOAA HADS server were combined to create long-term data sets using the "Data Merge Tool" in the GCE Data Toolbox for MATLAB software (https://gce-svn.marsci.uga.edu/trac/GCE_Toolbox). Beginning and ending dates of data sets were compared, and non-overlapping data in each subsequent file was added to the cumulative monthly data set. Monthly data were then reviewed (See Quality Control and Gap Filling), and added to the corresponding yearly data set for release. Time-steps of the data records were evaluated, and null (NaN) records were inserted as necessary to produce a monotonic time series prior to quality control and gap-filling. Method 4: Quality Control and Gap Filling -- Quality control analysis and basic gap-filling were performed using the GCE Data Toolbox for MATLAB software (https://gce-svn.marsci.uga.edu/trac/GCE_Toolbox). Quality rules were defined for each variable, including range checks based on sensor and parameter limits to screen for impossible values, historic range and sanity checks based on corresponding values for related measurements to screen for questionable (unlikely) values, and pattern checks to screen for stuck sensor readings and other forms of data contamination. Specific rule expressions are described in the column descriptor metadata and in the description of the "Flag" column accompanying each measurement column. All flagged values were reviewed graphically, and flags determined to be spurious (e.g. assigned during unusual or extreme events) were cleared. Remaining flagged values were retained if questionable, or removed (converted to NaN) if judged invalid. Short-duration gaps in continuously-varying paramters (<4-6 hours) were filled using a shape-preserving cubic hermite interpolation method in MATLAB (pchip). Gaps in discontinuous parameters (e.g. precipitation) or gaps longer than 4-6 hours were not filled (i.e. gap-filling was deferred to end-users based on analytical considerations). b.
