Abstract: Long-term measurements of various atmospheric, soil and water properties were made using electronic sensors attached to the GCE-LTER eddy covariance flux tower deployed in a Spartina alterniflora salt marsh on Sapelo Island, Georgia. Variables measured include air and water temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, wind speed and direction, soil temperature, water pressure and solar radiation components (i.e. incident and reflected photosynthetically available, total, long-wave and shortwave radiation). Measurements were logged at 5 minute intervals using multiple Campbell Scientific Instruments CR3000 data loggers, and then combined into a single monotonic time series data set. Quality control analyses were performed to remove values deemed invalid due to sensor failure or miscalibration and to assign Q/C qualifiers to values outside expected ranges or failing various sanity and quality checks of the data. Note that some measurements were spatially replicated with multiple sensors deployed in different micro-habitats (e.g. at the tower and in a nearby marsh platform or creek). Sensors were also added to the tower at various times after the initial installation, therefore some variables do not span the entire period of record. This will be accomplished this through continuing long-term measurements of climate, water chemistry, oceanic exchange, and human activities on the landscape. 2) Describe temporal and spatial variability in physical, chemical, geological and biological characteristics of the study system (coastal wetland complexes) and how they respond to external drivers. This will be accomplished through field monitoring in combination with remote sensing and modeling. 3) Characterize the ecological responses of intertidal marshes to disturbance. This will be accomplished by ongoing monitoring and experimental work to evaluate system responses to major perturbations in three key marsh habitats (changes in inundation and predator exclusion in Spartina-dominated salt marshes; increases in salinity in fresh marshes; changes in runoff in high marshes), by implementing standardized experimental disturbances along salinity and elevation gradients, and by tracking responses to natural disturbances. 4) Evaluate ecosystem properties at the landscape level (habitat distribution, net and gross primary production, C budgets) and assess the cumulative effects of disturbance on these properties. The project will also develop relationships between drivers and response variables, which can be used to predict the effects of future changes. This will be accomplished through a combination of data synthesis, remote sensing and modeling. 5. Abstract: The Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) program, based at the University of Georgia Marine Institute on Sapelo Island, Georgia, was established in 2000 to study long-term change in coastal ecosystems. Estuaries (places where salt water from the ocean mixes with fresh water from the land) and their adjacent marshes provide food and refuge for fish, shellfish and birds; protect the shoreline from storms; help to keep the water clean; and store carbon. The GCE LTER researchers study marshes and estuaries to understand how these ecosystems function, to track how they change over time, and to predict how they might be affected by future changes in climate and human activities. They accomplish this by tracking the major factors that can cause long-term change in coastal areas (e.g. sea level, rainfall, upstream development), and measuring the effects of these factors on the study site. They also conduct focused studies to assess how key marsh habitats will respond to major changes expected in the future, including large-scale experiments to evaluate the effects of a) increases in the salinity of the water that floods freshwater marshes (mimicking drought and/or sea level rise), b) changes in water runoff from land into the upland marsh border (mimicking drought or upland development), and c) exclusion of larger organisms in the salt marsh (mimicking long-term declines in predators). During this award they will initiate additional studies to systematically evaluate how coastal wetlands respond to disturbances. Disturbances, or disruptions in the environment, are particularly important to understand in the context of long-term background changes such as increasing sea level, and GCE researchers are working to assess the cumulative effects of multiple disturbances on the landscape. The GCE education and outreach program works to share an understanding of coastal ecosystems with teachers and students, coastal managers, citizen scientist and the general public. 6. Design Characteristics: A time series of environmental sensor measurements were collected from several fixed locations in a Spartina alterniflora salt marsh within 300 meters of the GCE-LTER eddy covariance flux tower. b. Data Collection Duration and Frequency: Sensor measurements were automatically logged every 5 minutes by programs running on multiple Campbell Scientific Instruments (CSI) CR3000 electronic data loggers. New data records were then downloaded to a computer via wireless communications and appended to tables every 15 minutes using CSI LoggerNet software. Field and Laboratory Methods: Method 1: Flux Tower Siting and Installation -- In 2013 a pressure-treated lumber dock platform and elevated walkway were constructed in a Spartina alterniflora salt marsh near the Duplin River on western Sapelo Island, Georgia for installing an eddy covariance flux tower system. The platform base was positioned at an elevation of about 1m above the historic spring high tide water level to avoid submerging the equipment. A 6m steel tower was then built on top of the platform for mounting the data loggers and primary atmospheric sensors (air temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction). Additional supports were installed in the marsh 4m south of the tower for mounting solar radiation and precipitation sensors to avoid tower interference. In 2019 additional supports were installed 30m northeast of the tower for installation of additional solar radiation sensors. Method 2: Sensor Deployment -- Thermistor sensors were installed in gill shields at 1m and 6m tower elevations to measure air temperature, and a combined air temperature and relative humidity sensor was installed at ~3.5m elevation to capture vertical temperature gradients at the tower. A sonic anemometer was installed at ~4m elevation for measuring three dimensional wind speed and direction. A tipping bucket rain gauge and array of solar radiation sensors (total solar Pyranometer, incident and reflected PAR sensors, and net radiometer) were installed 4m south of the tower to avoid shading by the tower and platform. A water temperature and pressure transducer was deployed 50m southwest of the tower in a tidal creek to measure water level and temperature. In 2017 an additional water temperature and pressure transducer was installed 50m northeast of the tower in a buried sump to record water temperature and pressure on the marsh platform for comparison. In 2019 an additional array of solar radiation sensors (incident and reflected PAR sensors, net radiometer) was added 30m northeast of the tower in an undisturbed section of Spartina marsh for improved measurement of reflection and absorption by marsh plants. Note that spatially redundant sensors were installed on separate CR3000 loggers for reasons of wiring logistics and fault tolerance, but the real-time clocks of both loggers were regularly checked and updated to prevent differences greater than 5sec. Method 3: Data Collection and Transmission -- Sensor readings were measured at a frequency of 10 Hz (atmospheric and radiation sensors) or 60 sec (water pressure transducers, rain gauge) by CR Basic programs running on two Campbell Scientific Instruments CR3000 data loggers. Appropriate aggregate values (e.g. mean, total, minimum, maximum) were then logged to data tables at 5 minute intervals. New records from the data tables were synchronized to a remote computer (SmallPC SC240ML) every 5 minutes via 600 MHz spread spectrum wireless radio using Campbell LoggerNet software. The accumulated data files were then synchronized to computers at the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia every 30 minutes via cellular modem using Deltacopy rsync software for archival and post-processing. Method 4: Data Processing and Quality Control -- Campbell TOA5 (table-oriented ASCII) files recorded by LoggerNet software were processed hourly to create documented tabular data sets using the GCE Data Toolbox for MATLAB software. Automated workflows were developed to parse the data table, assign column metadata descriptors (title, description, units, precision), add boilerplate documentation metadata, perform initial quality control based on pre-defined rules for each data column and assign appropriate Q/C qualifier flags based on the rules matched. Q/C rules included limit checks for out-of-range or impossible values, pattern checks for stuck sensors or spikes, and sanity checks comparing values to redundant or related sensor measurements and historic value ranges. Processed data files and plots were then posted to an intranet website as provisional data for review. Newly acquired data and automated Q/C flag assignments were reviewed monthly-to-quarterly and finalized, then combined with prior data for distribution and archiving. Method 5: Data Integration -- A GCE Data Toolbox workflow was developed to combine selected sensor measurements from the multiple flux tower data loggers into a single integrated data set. Data sets were joined based on matching time stamp values, and empty data rows were inserted after joining as necessary to create a monotonic (evenly-spaced) time series. Columns from redundant sensors were renamed for clarity and to signify deployment differences (e.g. duplicate Mean_Temp_Soil columns to Mean_Temp_Soil_Tower and Mean_Temp_Soil_Marsh). Documentation metadata was then updated to reflect the revised scope of the combined data set for archiving and distribution. b.
