Fall 2009 plant monitoring survey -- biomass calculated from shoot height and flowering status of plants in permanent plots at GCE sampling sites 1-10. Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER Data Catalog (data set PLT-GCEM-1004b; http://gce-lter.marsci.uga.edu/data/PLT-GCEM-1004b) B. Accession Number: PLT-GCEM-1004b C. Description 1. Originator(s): Name: Steven C. Pennings Address: Department of Biology and Biochemistry University of Houston Houston, Texas 77204-5513 Country: USA Email: scpennin@central.uh.edu 2. Abstract: The biomass of plants surveyed in permanent plots at 10 GCE LTER sampling sites in October 2009 was estimated based on allometric relationships between biomass and shoot height and flowering status derived for each site, zone, and species in October 2002 and October 2008. Biomass was only calculated for dominant species, including Spartina alterniflora, S. cynosuroides, Juncus roemerianus, and Zizaniopsis miliacea, as well as rarer species including Scirpus spp, Panicum spp. and Typha angustifolia. This data set is based on GCE plant monitoring survey data set PLT-GCEM-1004a, and allometric relationships were based on GCE data sets PLT-GCEM-0211b, PLT-GCEM-0711, and PLT-GCEM-2011. 3. Objectives: To understand the mechanisms by which variation in the quality, source and amount of both fresh and salt water create temporal and spatial variability in estuarine habitats and processes, in order to predict directional changes that will occur in response to long-term shifts in estuarine salinity patterns 5. Abstract: The Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) LTER program, located on the central Georgia coast, was established in 2000. The study domain encompasses three adjacent sounds (Altamaha, Doboy, Sapelo) and includes upland (mainland, barrier islands, marsh hammocks), intertidal (fresh, brackish and salt marsh) and submerged (river, estuary, continental shelf) habitats. Patterns and processes in this complex landscape vary spatially within and between sites, and temporally on multiple scales (tidal, diurnal, seasonal, and interannual). Overlain on this spatial and temporal variation are long-term trends caused by climate change, sea level rise, and human alterations of the landscape. These long-term trends are likely to manifest in many ways, including changes in water quality, river discharge, runoff and tidal inundation patterns throughout the estuarine landscape. The overarching goal of the GCE program is to understand the mechanisms by which variation in the quality, source and amount of both fresh and salt water create temporal and spatial variability in estuarine habitats and processes, in order to predict directional changes that will occur in response to long-term shifts in estuarine salinity patterns. The objectives of the current funding cycle are 1) to continue to document long-term patterns of environmental forcing to the coastal zone, 2) to link environmental forcing to observed spatial and temporal patterns of biogeochemical processes, primary production, community dynamics, decomposition and disturbance, 3) to investigate the underlying mechanisms by which environmental gradients along the longitudinal (freshwater-saltwater) and 4) lateral (upland-subtidal) axes of estuaries drive ecosystem change, and 5) to explore the relative importance of larval transport and the conditions of the adult environment in determining community and genetic structure across both the longitudinal and vertical gradients of the estuary. To meet these objectives, we utilize a suite of approaches including long-term monitoring of abiotic drivers and ecosystem responses; manipulative and natural experiments designed to enable us to examine the importance of key ecosystem drivers; and modeling. 6. Climate: Climate summary for Sapelo Island, Georgia, based on NWS data from 1980-2010: Daily-aggregated Values: Mean (sample standard deviation) mean air temperature: 20.09°C (7.28°C) minimum air temperature: 15.02°C (7.96°C) maximum air temperature: 24.82°C (6.98°C) total precipitation: 3.26mm (10.3mm) Yearly-aggregated Daily Values: Mean (sample standard deviation) total precipitation (1980-2010): 1124mm (266mm) 2. Experimental or Sampling Design a. Design Characteristics: A quadrat survey was conducted in October 2009 to measure the species and size distribution of plants in the permanent plots at 10 GCE LTER sampling sites. b. Permanent Plots: Permanent plots were established in the marsh areas at each GCE sampling site in October, 2000. Each site was divided into two nominal zones based on marsh structure -- creek zone and high marsh -- and eight plots were randomly located in each zone and marked with stakes. Plots are visually inspected prior to each annual survey for signs of disturbance by wrack inundation, wildlife activity, and creekbank erosion. Plots lost due to catastrophic disturbance are replaced with new plots in different locations within the same marsh zone, which are assigned distinct plot numbers. (See history of plot disturbance in the site description section for details). c. Data Collection Duration and Frequency: A stratified random quadrat sampling design was used to determine the species and size distribution of plants in two nominal marsh zones (creek and high marsh) at each GCE LTER sampling site. Beginning of Observations: Oct 14, 2009 End of Observations: Oct 17, 2009 3. Research Methods a. Field and Laboratory Methods: Method 1: Quadrat sampling -- Quadrats were randomly placed within two nominal marsh zones at each site (eight plots per zone) to create permanent plots in October 2000. These plots were used for this study, in addition to 5 new plots added in October 2001, 2 new plots added in October 2002, and 5 new plots added in October 2003 to replace original plots lost due to catastrophic disturbance. The quadrats were marked using PVC or wooden stakes and varied in size, measuring 0.5m by 0.5m, 1m by 0.5m, or 0.25m by 0.25m, as indicated in the "Quadrat_Area" data column. Method 2: Plant measurement -- The taxon, shoot height, and flowering status was recorded for each shoot > 10cm in height present in each quadrat. Method 3: Biomass Calculation -- Plant biomass was calculated for predominant flowering plants based on the allometric relationships between plant height, flowering status and biomass calculated by site, zone and species using the formula: ln(Biomass) = constant + htslope*ln(Plant_Height) + flslope*ln(Flowering_Status) Method 4: RTK-GPS Survey of Permanent Plot Locations -- A survey was performed in April 2010 to measure the precise geographic locations and elevations of long-term plant plots at GCE-LTER marsh study sites 1-10. The survey was performed using a Trimble R6 real-time kinematic GPS sytem with Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) support. The base receiver was placed on a permanent cement base installed near each field site, connected to GLONASS satellite services via mobile 3G Internet connection, and allowed to establish a stable benchmark positional fix prior to the survey. A portable wireless rover unit was then used to collect and log horizontal position and vertical elevation data on the ground at the center of each plot. Data were then corrected and analyzed using Trimble Geomatics Office software to determine latitude, longitude and elevation, and plant plot locations were then registered in the GCE-LTER geographic database. Location, Longitude and Latitude columns were then added to the data table based on matching site, marsh zone and plot number of each record to the corresponding plot identifier in the geographic database. For plots that were lost due to catastrophic disturbance prior to 2010 and replaced, the measured location of the the replacement plots were used to provide estimated positional information for the legacy plots, and the estimated values were flagged and the level of uncertainty was described based on the number of times the plot was replaced prior to RTK-GPS survey. b.
