Name: Alligator Creek
Location: Georgia, USA
Description: Mid-estuary/salt marsh site on the west side of Friday Cap Creek along the Altamaha River. This is a brackish marsh with salinities around 14 PSU during drought, less than 5 PSU normally. A hydrographic sonde is deployed adjacent to this site in the Altamaha River near Alligator Creek, attached to the US Coast Guard Daymarker 2 pilings.
Access Information: Accessible by boat only. Access is moderately easy on the steep mud bank at the mouth of the small creek. (Ownership: Georgia DNR, private land owners on Broughton Island)
Restrictions: Duck hunts may be conducted in September and November-February and feral hog hunts occur year-around, so wear orange vests and use caution (contact Bob Monroe, supervisor for Coastal Management Region 7, at 912-263-3173 for information)
Vegetation: Fringe of tall Spartina alterniflora and S. cynosuroides at creek banks. High marsh has narrow band of medium height S. alterniflora backed by vast expanses of Juncus.
Fauna: Melampus present, but no Littoraria. Alligators, snakes and wild pigs are present.
