Sapelo Research Application FormResearch Application ID: GCE-14-2011 (submitted: 06/23/2011, status: approved)Provide a brief title for web displayLong term monitoring of salt pans at Marsh Landing Investigator InformationOn Island Sponsor: GCE SINERR UGAMI GADNR
Briefly describe the project goals and methodologyI installed sixteen permanent plots (1.5 x 2 m) at the edge of the Marsh Landing salt pan in 1997. I have been monitoring the vegetation in these plots annually to determine how changes in climate and sea level affect the size of the salt pan and the vegetation bordering the salt pan. Where will the project be located?Just north of the Marsh Landing road, in the salt pan, approximately at 31o 25'02.20N; 81o17'33.87W based on google earth. How will you provide GPS coordinates for study sites?I will arrange with my research sponsor to collect and register GPS coordinates What are the expected start and end dates of the project?Start Date: 01/01/1997 End Date: (ongoing) How many people will access the site and at what frequency? Two people, once a year, for 3 hours. Keywords that describe your projectWhat equipment will be deployed in the field? Each plot is marked with about six short wooden or pvc stakes. Will plants or animals be collected as part of this study?None. What are the likely impacts of the project on the site?None. Once the monitoring stops, stakes will be removed. Will the project design include boardwalks? If not, explain why not.No. The site is visited so infrequently that boardwalks are not needed. The salt pan is firm enough that we leave no footprints, and we walk in unvegetated areas. How long will impacts persist after the research is concluded? No impacts expected. When stakes are removed, the holes left behind will collapse and fill within a few days.
