Sapelo Research Application FormResearch Application ID: GCE-2-2011 (submitted: 04/21/2011, status: approved)Provide a brief title for web displayGCE Long-term Hydrographic Monitoring Investigator InformationOn Island Sponsor: GCE SINERR UGAMI GADNR
Briefly describe the project goals and methodologyLong-term measurements of conductivity, temperature and sub-surface pressure are collected at 30 minute intervals at 8 sites in the GCE-LTER domain. The long-term objective of this network is to document spatial and temporal variability of salinity and its relationship to water level and river discharge. Monitoring sites were chosen to span the salinity gradient as well as to take advantage of existing physical structures (e.g. docks or pilings) for mounting instruments. Where will the project be located? The long-term moorings are located in transect regions used for quarterly oceanographic surveys and near to GCE-LTER marsh study sites. How will you provide GPS coordinates for study sites?GPS coordinates are already registered in the GCE-LTER database What are the expected start and end dates of the project?Start Date: 08/01/2001 End Date: (ongoing) How many people will access the site and at what frequency? One person will access each site every 2-3 weeks Keywords that describe your projectWhat equipment will be deployed in the field?Sea-Bird Electronics 37-SM data loggers (sondes) will be deployed at each mooring location. Sondes will be tethered to pilings using eyebolts and steel cable, and a protective 6 inch PVC tube will be installed on each piling to protect the instrument from damage and prevent horizontal movement. The equipment will be removed from the piling by GCE field technicians if the long-term monitoring program is ended. Will plants or animals be collected as part of this study? No plants or animals will be collected. What are the likely impacts of the project on the site? Each data logger is suspended from an eyebolt anchored in a piling. A 10 foot long pvc pipe is also attached to each piling. The GCE site 1 mooring does not have a pvc pipe. Will the project design include boardwalks? If not, explain why not.No- The sites are on the water. How long will impacts persist after the research is concluded?Fouling organisms will cover the site within a few months.
