Chris Craft, Co-Investigator / Professor![]() Research Emphasis:Decomposition, soil organic matter accumulation and sediment deposition will be measured in salt-, brackish- and tidal fresh-water marshes to test hypotheses concerning the role of freshwater pulsing versus tidal pulsing on wetland organic matter and sediment dynamics. Decomposition will be estimated by three methods, tagged leaves, root bags and soil respiration. Soil organic matter accumulation will be measured over several different time scales using radiometric dating (C-14, Pb-210, Cs-137). Sedimentation will be measured using dating techniques and feldspar marker layers. These directed studies will elucidate (1) patterns and control of wetland organic matter accumulation, (2) patterns of inorganic inputs, (3) biogeochemical linkages between terrestrial and marine systems and (4) effects of natural and anthropogenic perturbations on coastal wetlands.
