Daniela Di Iorio, Co-Investigator / Professor![]() Research Emphasis:Turbulent mixing processes in bottom boundary layers affect the flux of nutrients out of the benthic boundary layer and at the same time acts to homogenize fluid properties. Also many substances are discharged from land, become diluted by mixing processes and eventually spread to the coastal sea by advection and dispersive mechanisms. Our interests include understanding when turbulent mixing processes are more enhanced and determining the physical forces (buoyancy, tidal, wind/wave) involved. Also we want to characterize the physical processes (shear dispersion, turbulent diffusion, tidal pumping) that lead to longitudinal dispersion and diffusion of a tracer (salt) so as to understand material transport from the salt marshes to the coastal channels.
